Newsletter - August 2009

The days have been busy at Andersson's during August, with great game viewing and camp enhancements.

Wildlife and landscape
As we come to the end of the dry season, we enjoy viewing more and more wildlife at our waterhole in front of the main area. Peak hours for viewing are around 12:00 and again around 17:00.

The dynamics of the lions on Ongava Game Reserve seem to be changing drastically and we have seen and felt it at Andersson's, with the resident young lion male being ejected from the pride. This has left his ego crushed and he now charges anything that moves inside or outside the fence!

Weather
Blue skies, lovely sunny days, cold nights. The day temperatures have been rising steadily and becoming quite hot at times. Night temperatures can go as low as about 5°C, but are more likely to be around 10-15ºC.  As September creeps up on us, we have experienced more wind during the day as well as during the nights. A challenge currently is the fires in the Reserve and elsewhere - we are suffering severely from the smoke that is blown across Ongava.

Camp rebuilds and upgrades
The coverings for the outside bathrooms have been decided on and the construction is in full swing. To improve the bush experience for our guests, we have erected a beautiful and very tranquil birdwatchers' spot under two shady acacia trees.

Managers and guides
Charles and Annalie are still going strong with the help of their very competent assistant managers Sakkie and Lona. Our admin person, Verona, has been staying at Little Kulala to help out with month-end there and we are very proud of her being chosen for this task.

Agnes, Shilongo and Frans make up the guiding team.
